These are a few poems I wrote while running long-haul for Stonewood Transport. Keep in mind that even though a certain person is mentioned, it does not reflect my present situation.

"ON THE ROAD"
The highway is a stretch of land
with many of hill and bend,
And on cold dark lonely nights
it seems to have no end.
The lines are painted there to see
each mile that we go,
Sometimes the road is clean and dry
and sometimes covered with snow.
My Family they are on my mind
yes each and every mile,
Can't wait to return from each trip
to see each friendly smile.
My Mom she is my precious strength
an angel in disguise,
My Dad he is the silent type
but I see worry in his eyes.
Jamie-Lee she is my little sprout
she misses me when I go,
But I'll tell her "don't worry dear,
I'll be back before you know".
Short runs would be better of course
Stan and I both know,
But we never get to look into it
we're always on the go.
One of these days we'll take the time
to go and make things right,
So we can see our Families more
and kiss our kids goodnight.
"MISSING"
The simple family life
indeed that's what we miss,
The feeling of a warm embrace
or a tiny little kiss.
To go to bed at night
and know everything is alright,
To turn the sheets down on the bed
curl up and sleep easy for the night.
To wake up in the morning
and get ready for the day,
To go to work at a normal job
with better hours and steady pay.
To be able to call our parents
any ole time of the day,
Even just to say "hello"
at the beginning and end of the day.
The things we miss are many
a few hours at home won't do,
To wake up "happy" each morning
instead of feeling so blue.
But we're doing something about it
life's too short to feel this way,
Won't be long till things are better
who cares about better pay.
Money isn't everything
through our mistake we've found out,
It's Family that are most important
the rest will work itself out.
"THE AIRLINE"
Up and down around and around
as through the airline we go,
Steady now don't miss that gear
and God help us if there's snow.
It's best to go through in daylight
'cause there's no place you can park,
Bad enough to fight the windy road
let alone dealing with the dark.
A few have met their maker here
on this long and twisting road,
weather may have been the cause
or the shifting of their load.
Day hill is a real climbing treat
stop and second gear if you will,
'cause chances are if you don't
you're in for a hell of a bill.
Stan my man always drives this stretch
with a careful but steady pace,
and me well I'm on the other side
with "scared shitless" written on my face.
Hats off to the men who thought they could
but didn't make it through,
Be wise, be careful, be courteous
and make sure that YOU do!
"GUARDIAN ANGEL"
There she sits so quietly
her wings like in mid-flight,
Watching over us through the day
guiding us safely by night.
Sometimes the sun catches the crystal
nestled securely in her wings,
She casts a ray of such beauty
it turns you thoughts to pleasant things.
We know that she is with us
no matter where we may roam,
Reminding us to be careful
for there's Family waiting at home.
